Semantics: Collocation
COLLOCATION
Corpus (plural corpora) is a collection of language data gathered from spoken or written sources used for linguistic research and analysis. It is a large and structured set of texts (nowadays usually electronically stored and processed). Corpus Linguistics is the study of language based on examples of "real life" language use stored in corpora -computerized databases created for linguistic research. Corpus linguistics can then use the database to find out how often specific words or phrases occur and what types of collocations are most common. In corpus linguistics, collocation defines a sequence of words or terms that co-occur more often than would be expected by chance. A collocation is made up of two or more words that are commonly used together. Collocations are word pairings that are expected to come together. Good collocation examples of this type of word pairing are combinations with 'make' and 'do'. You make a cup of tea, but do your homework.
